Known for creating meaningful change in the world, American University is proud to partner with Teach for America (TFA) as part of a joint effort to confront educational inequity. This partnership opens the door to offer three master’s degrees and one graduate certificate—at reduced tuition rates—from AU’s School of Education (SOE) to TFA corps members, alumni, and staff. Our Master of Arts in Special Education: Learning Disabilities prepares teachers to meet the specific needs of preschool, elementary, junior high, high school, and adult students at risk for or living with learning disabilities. The Master of Arts in Teaching is a five-semester program that prepares graduates for direct entry into positions as classroom teachers and other related careers. The third option, Master of Education (MEd) in Education Policy and Leadership, offers the policy studies track or teacher leadership track. Students will take courses built on a cohort-based design and, upon graduation, will be well equipped to engage in transformative education policy and practice. The final option is the graduate certificate in Adminstration, Supervision, and Leadership (ASL) program, designed for students to build and sharpen skills required to be leaders of schools (public, private, charter), districts, charter systems, or education-related organizations.
AU’s students receive a well-rounded education experience by participating in cutting-edge research, interning at world-class institutions, and networking with well-connected alumni and faculty. Students are distinguished for their commitment to service, wholehearted leadership, and ability to rethink global and domestic challenges and opportunities. Together with TFA corps members, alumni, and staff, American University will continue to make strides and meaningful progress in educational outcomes within the United States and abroad.
About the Campus
The American University campus is located in the capitol of national and international politics. Amid historical landmarks, students are inspired by past and present political decisions that have shaped our country and impacted lives nationwide. Access to current and former policy makers, at both local and federal levels, offers students unique opportunities that cannot be found elsewhere. From completing a practicum at a local school to conducting research with a distinguished institution, our graduates are exposed to a wide variety of methods, materials, and program-specific academic skills—preparing them to join the varied and diverse workforce of tomorrow.
Our rich national and local heritage attracts students from all 50 states, and countries around the globe, resulting in an above-average university diversity ranking. AU’s diverse student body is evidence of our commitment to encouraging new ideas and ways of thinking. In addition, American University’s President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion has taken action to introduce a mandatory course on diversity for all first-year and transfer students and to increase faculty diversity.
AU faculty members have a wide variety of backgrounds. They are veteran teachers, esteemed authors, and researchers, involved with national and international scholarly organizations, and have received awards and recognition for their contributions to the education industry. Combined with experience teaching abroad, our faculty brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to AU’s classrooms to challenge and inspire the next generation of teachers and leaders.
Our Online Programs
The increasing pace of our modern lives necessitates an education that is convenient, flexible, and affordable. An online education provides students, from working professionals to single, stay-at-home parents, with the means and opportunity to achieve a higher education degree that is accessible—without sacrificing value. AU’s School of Education is proud to offer all three master’s education programs entirely online for TFA participants and AU students.
AU’s online programs are focused on clinical training, evidence-based frameworks, creativity, and innovation in educational approaches. The online learning environment offers live debates, breakout discussions, virtual presentations, and remote one-on-one meetings with faculty. AU faculty members are world-class educators—as well as thinkers, innovators, and leaders—who are shaping the field of education. Our programs challenge both experienced and aspiring teachers to develop a keen understanding of education policy, maintain awareness of developments in the educational sphere, and realize their full potential to change lives through teaching.
