Application Eligibility

Applicants must meet the minimum university requirements for undergraduate study (high school diploma) and possess a minimum of a 3.0 high school GPA. Admission decisions are based on each applicant's academic record, essays, recommendations, and motivations to have a Gap Program experience. Additionally, we assess other characteristics such as maturity, leadership, personal character and potential contribution to the American University community.

The AU Gap Program is a selective academic and experiential learning program. Due to the limited number of spaces in each track, candidates who receive an admission offer must place a deposit to join the program by the deposit deadline date.

In addition to the online application, applicants must submit either electronically or via mail:

  • Official copy of current high school transcript or international equivalent
  • Letter of Recommendation from a high school academic counselor
  • Letter of Recommendation from an extracurricular or community contact
  • Two 500-word essays
  • TOEFL scores – with minimum score of 80 – for international program candidates
  • Copy of most recent PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores - optional

Please note: questions are further outlined in the online application.

Applicants may email a copy of their transcripts and letters of recommendation to spexsdocuments@american.edu. If you choose to mail your documents (transcript and letters of recommendation), via United States Postal Service (USPS) please send them directly to our Program Office at:

School of Professional & Extended Studies
