Application Deadlines

The AU Gap program has rolling admissions. You can submit your application any time during the application cycle, up to the deadline.

Fall 2015 Semester: May 15, 2015
Year Program (Fall-Spring): May 15, 2015
Spring 2016 Semester: October 30, 2015

If admitted for the Fall 2015 or year-long programs, students must place a program deposit by Monday, June 1.

If admitted for the spring 2016 program, student must place a program deposit by Monday, November 30.

Application Eligibility

Applicants must meet the minimum university requirements for undergraduate study (high school diploma) and possess a minimum of a 3.0 high school GPA. Admission decisions are based on each applicant's academic record, essays, recommendations, and motivations to have a Gap Program experience. Additionally, we assess other characteristics such as maturity, leadership, personal character and potential contribution to the American University community. 

Application Process

The AU Gap Program is a selective academic and experiential learning program. Due to the limited number of spaces in each track, candidates who receive an admission offer must place a deposit to join the program by the deposit deadline date. 

In addition to the online application, applicants must submit either electronically or via mail:

  • High School transcript(s)
  • Letter of Recommendation from a high school academic counselor 
  • Letter of Recommendation from an extracurricular or community contact
  • As part of the online application, applicants will be asked to submit two 500-word essays explaining why you have decided to take a Gap semester or year and what you hope to gain from your semester in Washington, D.C.

Applicants may email a copy of their transcripts and letters of recommendation to spexsdocuments@american.edu. If you choose to mail your documents (transcript and letters of recommendation), via United States Postal Service (USPS) please send them directly to our Program Office at:

Once an application is submitted, we will review it and notify you of our decision within 1 to 2 weeks.
