Interview with Micaela Coleman Global Business & Trade, Spring 2015

What was your background prior to Graduate Professional Studies?
With a diverse background filled with an array of civic, professional, and academic experiences, my history before Graduate Professional Studies includes the following. I worked on the Hill for U.S. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty as a Press Assistant, Legislative Correspondent and Special Assistant. My public policy employment also includes stints at The Brookings Institution, Ohio House of Representatives and varying political campaigns with National Communications Media, the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus, Columbus City Council, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, Franklin County Democrat Party, and the Ohio Democratic Party. For undergrad, I attended Otterbein University in Ohio where I received my Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Economics in 2010.

Why did you choose to participate in Graduate Professional Studies?
I knew participation in Graduate Professional Studies would equip me with the skill set, first-hand experiences, networks and foundation needed to be a successful international business student and professional. I also knew my development would be greatly impacted by this opportunity both now and in the future as I prepare for a Master’s in Business Administration.

Where did you intern? What were some daily tasks at your internship? Favorite part?
I had a unique experience and was actually offered a full-time job while looking for my internship! I worked, and currently still work, at the North American Securities Administrators Association, the oldest international organization devoted to investor protection. In my role, I am responsible for communications, digital content, outreach and membership relations.

Did you know what your career/academic path looked like before you joined the program?
No, I didn't really. I had this background in International Studies and Economics and knew I was interested in making a shift to global business. However, after completing this program, my career focus was solidified.

What was your #1 takeaway from the Program? What would you tell others considering GPS?
My number 1 takeaway from the program was that business and policy are directly related- I learned that business can solve both simple and complex societal problems.

Did your time with Graduate Professional Studies directly affect your professional success?
I definitely believe so! I conducted and contributed to original and unique research; met with thought leaders and power players within my industry; was afforded a once-in-a-lifetime travel opportunity to Silicon Valley; and given access to an unparalleled network of faculty, staff and the greater AU community.

How would you summarize your experience in AU's Graduate Professional Studies?
Never turn down an opportunity. Have courage, take a leap of faith- it could lead to biggest discovery of your life!
Now is the time to take risks, try new things, challenge yourself, travel, learn, question, and above all, grow!
