Jumpstart Your College Career

This program is a really unique way to start your college experience.

At my internship, I was tasked with lobbying both elected officials and the general public, researching environmental issues, preparing media press releases, and much more. I could not have made a better choice in helping to prepare myself for a successful college career. Now, I am double majoring in Political Science in the School of Public Affairs and Journalism in the School of Communication, as a result of my experience with my internship.

The Mentorship Program Fits with Your AU College Plan

Imagine spending two days a week at BBC News or at the National Institutes of Health, or even at the US Senate. Or imagine living abroad-using an international city and cultural excursions as an extension of your classroom.

Think about how these experiences will impact your understanding of world issues, how they could change your outlook on your major, or what they could mean to your future.

When you join the Mentorship Program, this can happen. Working with you along the way are an AU professor and an advisor, serving as your mentors and guiding your semester.

The American University Experience and AU Core

American University believes that curiosity goes hand in hand with the knowledge and expertise that characterize difference-makers. The Mentorship Program aligns with this philosophy because while in the program our students develop intellectual habits that strengthen their academic success. Since our courses focus on experiential learning and inquiry, students become engaged participants in the great conversations that will define the future.

In the Mentorship Program, students fulfill some of the AU Core (College Writing, Math, and AUx1), along with courses that count toward majors or elective requirements – all of which count toward degree completion.
