Faces of Student Interns

DC is our classroom

Experience a semester in Washington. Virtual, Hybrid, and In-Person options available.

We Meet You Where You Are!

This Spring we are open and prepared to offer you a DC experience – in DC – or from your home or campus! No matter where you choose to experience your Washington Semester, we continue to support opportunities to learn, work, and explore DC through our academic seminars and internships. Our flexible approach provides you with a unique opportunity to be part of a global network of doers, thinkers, innovators, and changemakers.

Distinctly DC

This spring, you can experience a DC-based seminar virtually. Intensive and timely seminars, taught by American University faculty, provide provocative and topical coursework for students interested in topics as diverse as government, international affairs, public diplomacy, international organizations, communications, business & economics, social justice, criminal justice, and law.

Throughout the semester, guest speakers are invited to your virtual classroom, where you will have the opportunity to meet and engage with some of Washington’s best and brightest. Once University and DC Health Department regulations allow, we are prepared to add in-person/hybrid instruction to our course delivery for the spring 2021 semester.

Spring Seminars:

  • Managing the Pandemic in Globalized Societies
  • National Conversations in Times of Crisis
  • Criminal Legal System: Roots of Mass Incarceration and Racial Disparity
  • Political Transitions and Policy Implications

In-Person and Virtual Experience

WSP is the gateway for your professional and academic success. Find and secure a life-changing internship at a dynamic DC institution. In-person or virtual, you’ll find the ideal internship in DC to align with your goals. In the spring, we will offer hybrid and completely virtual internship options to accommodate your needs.

A sample of fall 2020 internships include:

  • Department of Education
  • Jacobs, Cordova and Associates
  • Millennium Project
  • National Youth Rights Association
  • Naval History Heritage Command
  • New York Center for Foreign Policy Affairs
  • Recording Industry Association of America

#InstagramTakeover (Day 1) by Fall 2020 Washington Semester Programs student ambassador Clarissa Soma Goncalves Cordeiro > "Greetings Washington Semester Programs (WSP) community and to folks around the globe. This is my #InstagramTakeover week, where I will be sharing more about my internship, studies, and the challenges of doing both during a pandemic. My name is Clarissa, and I am so glad to introduce myself as one of @au_wsp's #Fall2020 student ambassadors. I am an international student from Brazil and a Frances Perkins Scholar at my home institution, Mount Holyoke College @mtholyoke in Massachusetts. There I am majoring in psychology along with entrepreneurship, organizations, and society. This fall, I am participating in American University's Washington Semester Program, where I am fully immersed in a global policy and politics and international relations concentration. A fundamental part of this program is the internship component, and I am interning at Jacobs, Cordova & Associates (JC&A). JC&A is an international consulting firm with offices in Washington DC, Dublin, and Mexico City. JC&A tackles and reforms deep-seated regulatory problems worldwide while boosting the rule of law and the role of good regulations in protecting vital public interests. Thank you for tuning in today. I'm l looking forward to interacting with all of you this week!" #DCisOurClassroom #ExperientialLearning @AmericanUniversity @AU_SPExS #AmericanUniversity #WashingtonDC #DC #DCinterns #internship #DCinternships #WashingtonSemesterProgram #WashingtonSemesterPrograms #Brazil #MtHolyokeCollege
