Quarantine and Isolation For Residential Students

Quarantine

Quarantine separates and restricts the movement of people who were exposed to a contagious disease to see if they become sick. If you have had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, you will be asked to quarantine.

  • You will be notified by either a member of the AU Affiliate Notification Team, a member of DC Health, or you may be contacted by both. Please respond to all calls and work with health officials as necessary so that they may gather important public health information related to your case.
  • Do not attend your regularly scheduled COVID-19 test in Constitution Hall. Make an appointment for your next test through the Student Health Center by calling 202-885-3380 or online via the Student Health Portal. If you have no symptoms, schedule your test no earlier than 5 days after your date of potential exposure. Testing earlier than this can increase the chances of a false negative test result.
  • Quarantine takes place in your currently assigned bedspace:
    • No guests are allowed during quarantine
    • You should only submit maintenance requests for emergency issues (e.g., toilet isn’t working, power outage, heat not working)
  • You should remain in your quarantine space for the duration of quarantine, unless you are picking up food, washing laundry, seeking medical attention, or are evacuating the building in an emergency
    • If you leave for any of these activities, be sure you always have your face covering on
  • If you live in a shared space, please separate yourself from others to the extent possible by remaining in your bedroom unless actively using your bathroom (or kitchen, if applicable)
  • Per DC Health guidelines, quarantine will last for a minimum of 14-days, regardless of if you receive a negative COVID-19 test result

Isolation

Isolation separates sick people with a contagious disease from people who are not sick. If you test positive for COVID-19, with or without symptoms, you will be asked to self-isolate and will be moved into isolation housing to support your recovery and ensure you have access to the proper resources.

  • You will be notified by either a member of the AU Student Health Center or a member of DC Department of Health, you may be contacted by both
  • If you receive notice that you’ve tested positive via email BEFORE you receive contact from the Student Health Center, please remain in your bedroom and begin packing for isolation
  • You will be contacted by a member of the Residence Life team to coordinate your move into isolation housing
  • A Public Health Associate from the Student Health Center will contact you daily to monitor symptoms; please answer these calls promptly
  • You should remain in your isolation space for the duration of isolation, unless you are picking up a food/meal delivery at the front door or washing laundry
    • If you leave for any of these activities be sure you always have your face covering on
    • You will order your meals on your own and have meals delivered to the front door of your isolation building
  • Isolation will last for at least 10 days, but may be longer depending on your symptoms
