Georgia

Bar Exam: Georgia offers a two-day non-UBE exam, which is comprised of:

  • Two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test (MPT) questions, which are "closed universe" practical questions that feature instructions, factual data, cases, statutes and other reference material supplied by examiners.
  • Four 45-minute essay questions, which are specific to Georgia law and cover the following subjects:
    • Business Organizations
    • Family Law
    • Federal Practice and Procedure
    • Georgia Practice and Procedure
    • Non-Monetary Remedies
    • Professional Ethics
    • Trusts, Wills and Estates
    • Uniform Commercial Code (Articles 2, 3, & 9)
    • All MBE subjects as detailed below
  • Two hundred multiple-choice Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) questions, covering the following seven subjects:
    • Constitutional Law
    • Contracts
    • Criminal Law & Procedure
    • Evidence
    • Federal Civil Procedure
    • Real Property
    • Torts


Scoring: Scaled MBE and scaled essay/MPT test scores are combined to determine if applicant has achieved a passing score of 270. Applicant must receive an MBE scaled score of 115 to have their essay and MPT answers graded.


Fitness Application Filing Deadlines: Before registering for the Bar Exam, Georgia requires applicants to submit a Fitness Application. The exact dates when these Applications must be submitted change year-to-year. Generally speaking, the early filing deadline is approximately seven months prior to the exams and the late filing deadline is approximately four months prior to the exams.

  • For February Bar Exams, the early filing deadline for Fitness Applications is usually in July of the previous year and the late filing deadline is in October of the previous year.
    • For the February 2022 bar exam, the early filing period ended on July 7, 2021 and the late filing period will end on October 6, 2021
  • For July Bar Exams, the early filing deadline for Fitness Applications is usually in December of the previous year and the late filing deadline is in March of the same year.
    • For the July 2022 bar exam, the early filing period will end on December 1, 2021 and the late filing period will end on March 2, 2022.


Bar Exam Filing Deadlines: After the Georgia Bar has certified your Fitness Application you must submit an additional Bar Exam Application. The exact dates when your Bar Exam Application must be submitted also change year-to-year. Generally speaking, the early filing deadline is approximately two months prior to the exams and the late filing deadline is approximately one month prior to the exams.


Fees: Both the Fitness Application and Bar Exam Application have their own fees. The fee for Fitness Applications submitted before the early application deadline is $400, while the fee for applications submitted before the late filing deadline is $800. The fee for Bar Exam Applications submitted before the early application deadline is $442, while the fee for applications submitted before the late filing deadline is $642.


Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam: A scaled score of 75 on the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) is required for admission to the bar.
