Apply to become a part of the Institute for Justice's Summer 2019 Class of Dave Kennedy Fellows
The Institute for Justice—the nation’s leading impact litigation firm dedicated to advancing individual liberty—is officially hiring for its Summer 2019 class of Dave Kennedy Fellows (formerly known as our summer clerks). Please take some time to learn more about this incredible opportunity and pass it along to your fellow Federalist Society members!
IJ’s summer fellowship program offers an unparalleled opportunity to substantively contribute to ongoing and future litigation in federal and state courts across the country. Recent highlights of past student assignments include:
Conducting research for IJ’s next case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, which will be argued on November 28! In Timbs v. Indiana, we are asking the Supreme Court to hold that the Excessive Fines Clause of Eighth Amendment applies not just to the federal government, but also to the states
Interviewing potential clients, reviewing documents in discovery, and helping attorneys prepare for depositions in IJ’s first class action lawsuit against the city of Philadelphia. Many summer fellows have had a hand in helping IJ secure a sweeping consent decree which dismantles the city’s unconstitutional civil forfeiture machine – bringing long-awaited justice to more than 25,000 property owners.
Researching and writing the first draft of IJ’s successful suggestion of mootness and motion for vacatur filed in the U.S. Supreme Court in IJ’s challenge to Missouri’s application of cosmetology licensing laws to African-style hair braiders as well as actively participating in substantive discussions and negotiations with opposing counsel.
In addition to substantively contributing to IJ’s cutting-edge litigation, fellows attend IJ’s weekend-long impact litigation conference, hear from leading practitioners and thinkers in the liberty movement, receive mentorship from IJ attorneys, and have the opportunity to participate in intensive legal research, writing, and media/communications trainings.
Fellowship positions typically run from the end of May through mid-August for a total of 10 weeks. IJ is also excited to announce that this fellowship is now a paid opportunity! Students will receive $7,000 for participation in the 10 week program. IJ is hiring for fellows at its six offices nationwide: Arlington, VA (Headquarters); Tempe, AZ; Miami, FL; Minneapolis, MN; Austin, TX; and Seattle, WA.
