In 2016, Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh appointed Professor Evia as first the Administrator and then Assistant Attorney General of the Office of the Attorney General for the Maryland Department of the Environment. A former Obama Administration Official, Professor Evia served on the political appointee staffs of three Cabinet Secretaries in Washington, DC. Immediately prior to his appointment in the Obama Administration, he clerked for Judge James E. Graves, Jr., President Obama's first appointment to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit in New Orleans. Aris practiced for several years at the San Francisco headquarters of Gordon & Rees LLP where he served as counsel for significant environmental and construction litigation throughout the United States. Immediately prior to joining the law firm, Aris served as senior staff at the State of California Legislature and taught as an Adjunct Professor at the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. Aris is admitted to the bars of California, New York, Maryland, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Aris earned a bachelor degree from the University of California at Davis, a Master of Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at the Syracuse University, and a law degree from the Syracuse Law School. A 1992 graduate of the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Aris served as an officer in the U.S. Army Individual Ready Reserve from 1993 to 2001.
