Paul Stein is a 1972 graduate of the American University, Washington College of Law. Following graduation, he served as an assistant state's attorney in the State Attorneys' Office for Montgomery County, Maryland, then co-founded Stein Sperling Bennett De Jong Driscoll PC, a full-service law firm headquartered in Rockville, Maryland. A life-long student of trial law and advocacy, Mr. Stein also teaches, passing on his passion for the courtroom to the next generation of trial lawyers. For nearly 30 years, he has served as an adjunct professor in the Trial Practice Program at American University's Washington College of Law, and has also taught litigation to paralegals at the University of Maryland.
Mr. Stein is an elected fellow to the American College of Trial Lawyers. He is also board certified as a civil and criminal trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy and has received the International Academy of Trial Lawyers Award for superior proficiency in the Art and Science of Trial Advocacy. He has been named to Best Lawyers(r); has been listed in Maryland Super Lawyers magazine and among the Top 100 Trial Lawyers in Maryland by The National Trial Lawyers; and has received a preeminent AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell. In 2014, Mr. Stein received the Bar Association of Montgomery County's Annual Professionalism Award. This award is presented to an individual Bar Association member whose professional conduct, qualifications and accomplishments are undeniably exemplary. The award recognizes continuing, long-standing service, rather than successful accomplishment of a single task, for the profession."
Mr. Stein currently serves as a court-appointed mediator for the Circuit Court of Montgomery County. He is a former panel chair for medical malpractice hearings for the Maryland Health Claim Arbitration Office and previously served on the Inquiry Panel for the Attorney Grievance Commission for the State of Maryland. Mr. Stein has served as Chairman of the Montgomery County Commission on Landlord and Tenant Affairs, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Montgomery County Bar Association, Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, as President of the Central Maryland Chapter of the United States Navy League, as a member of the Economic Development Commission for the City of Rockville, and as a member of the Board of Directors and Finance Committee of the Hebrew Home of Washington, D.C. In addition to these activities, Mr. Stein has lectured to bar groups and the community on criminal and family law.
