Length of the Programs and Dedication

Each program has a 16-week duration. Participants must be self-motivated and able to dedicate approximately 7 to 10 hours a week to watch video-lectures and work on quizzes, problems, and readings. Students may access the lectures according to their schedule, and will be able to access a Professor when needed. While the program is self-paced, weekly advances and participation are expected.

Unique Online Certificate Programs

The distance-learning Certificate Programs provide participants with the flexibility to earn a certificate in International Arbitration from a world-renowned educational institution in Washington, D.C. while maintaining their day-to-day commitments.

The distance-learning programs make use of the flexibility of online communication technology to prepare participants with the foundational knowledge and skills to succeed in the complex and ever-changing field of international arbitration.

Optional Traditional Face-to-Face "Seat Time" in Washington, D.C.

Registration in the programs (commercial or investment arbitration), has the added benefit of having the option of auditing 2 summer courses during the Arbitration Summer Program. This will allow participants to meet the Professors and complement online learning with traditional face-to-face "seat time.”

Who Should Apply?

This Certificate Program is geared to recent graduates and mid-career attorneys eager to acquire working knowledge of the legal principles and practical implications of international commercial and investment arbitration. The programs are also a good way to update knowledge for attorneys who have had some exposure to arbitration, and who want to follow up to the latest developments in this quickly changing field.

The programs are further open to other specialists without a legal qualification, such as economist, engineers and political scientists who are interested in learning more about international arbitration. Candidates who do not hold a law degree must send a CV and statement of interest to arbitration@wcl.american.edu

Tuition per program is $2,475.00.
Non-refundable registration fee for one or both programs: $65.

To receive a Certificate, students must take and pass an exam for each program (48-hour take-home). A Certificate of Attendance will be presented to students who do not wish to take the exams. Participants will have a period of approximately 2 weeks to decide when to download the exams from the programs' online platforms.

Program Changes & Withdrawals

Applicants who have registered or paid a registration fee will be informed promptly of any changes in the Program and, in the unlikely event of a cancellation, will receive a full refund for the program (excluding the application fee of $65, which is non-refundable).

Refund is only available if you withdraw before the start of classes. Cancellations after that time will not be refunded. Substitutions will be considered. Requests for refunds should be directed to the International Arbitration Program. The address is as follows:
