- In deciding whether to assign a transgender or intersex inmate to a facility for male or female inmates, and in making other housing and programming assignments, ADOC shall consider on a case-by-case basis whether the placement would ensure the inmate’s health and safety, and whether the placement would present management or security problems.
- Transgender and intersex inmates shall be given the opportunity to shower separately from other inmates.

- Procedures
- Inmates will be assigned to an ADOC Institution in accordance with their gender as determined by their external genitalia. The initiation of sexual reassignment is prohibitive in a correctional setting. Self-inflicted genital mutilation or other forms of self-mutilation are contraindications for sexual reassignment treatment.
- Inmates entering ADOC with prior surgical alteration of genitals and/or hormonal therapy procedures will continue to receive maintenance hormone replacements.
