  2. Language:
    1. In deciding whether to assign a transgender or intersex inmate to a facility for male or female inmates, and in making other housing and programming assignments, ADOC shall consider on a case-by-case basis whether the placement would ensure the inmate’s health and safety, and whether the placement would present management or security problems.
    2. Transgender and intersex inmates shall be given the opportunity to shower separately from other inmates.
  3. Policy Administrative Regulation Number 637: Gender Identity Disorder
    1. Procedures
      1. Inmates will be assigned to an ADOC Institution in accordance with their gender as determined by their external genitalia. The initiation of sexual reassignment is prohibitive in a correctional setting. Self-inflicted genital mutilation or other forms of self-mutilation are contraindications for sexual reassignment treatment.
      2. Inmates entering ADOC with prior surgical alteration of genitals and/or hormonal therapy procedures will continue to receive maintenance hormone replacements.

“The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons.”
