Alaska

The state of Alaska is a unified penal system.

  1. StatePolicy: PREA Housing Placement (no specific mention of transgender housing)
  2. Language:
    1. The results of DOC from 809.19A, PREA Risk Assessment shall be utilized in housing considerations.
    2. Prisoners who score as a Potential Aggressor shall not be housed with prisoners who score as a Potential Victim and vice versa.
  3. Policy: Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice, PREA Risk Screening Policy (L-101) (Alaska is a unified juvenile system; all detention and secure treatment facilities are operated by the State of Alaska).
  4. Language:
    1. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or intersex (LGBTQQI) Juveniles
      1.  Staff shall document, using a JOMIS chrono, note-type "PREA," when a juvenile self-discloses as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or intersex (LGBTQQI) during the course of a screening or at any other time.
      2. Juveniles who identify as LGBTQQI shall not be given particular housing assignments solely on the basis of such identification or status.
      3. The facility shall consider whether to assign a transgender or intersex juvenile to a male or female housing unit (if available at the facility) on a case-by-case basis. Ensuring the juvenile's health and safety and whether the placement would present management or security concerns may be considered.
      4. Placement and programing assignments for LGBTQQI residents shall be reassessed by the unit supervisor at least twice a year to review any threats to safety experienced by the resident. Reassessment of placement and programing assignments shall be noted in a JOMIS chrono, note type "PREA."
      5. LGBTQQI juveniles’ own views with respect to his or her own safety shall be given serious consideration. A LGBTQQI youth request for placement and program assignments shall be noted in a JOMIS chrono, note type "PREA."
      6. LGBTQQI juveniles shall be given the opportunity to shower separately from other residents. A LGBTQQI juvenile's preferences regarding to the opportunity to shower separately shall be noted in a JOMIS chrono, note type "PREA."
