WCL Students Go to CITES Conference of the Parties
Lauren Tavar ('17), Ingrid Lesemann ('18), and Christopher Garbarino ('17), student members of the Animal Law Society and Environmental Law Society, travelled to Johannesburg, South Africa to attend the 17th Conference of the Parties (CoP17) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), a multilateral treaty to protect endangered plants and animals. While in South Africa. Our students had the opportunity to witness international treaty negotiations for what was deemed by many as the most successful CITES CoP to date.

PICEL Participates in World Bank Annual Meetings
During the first week of October, the World Bank and IMF held their Annual Meetings. As we do in most years, PICEL participated. PICEL Coordinator Erika Lennon attended sessions during the civil society policy forum, coordinated with partners at NGOs, and attended meetings. During the meetings, much of our time was dedicated to sessions and meetings related to the independent accountability mechanisms.

WCL Hosts Discussion of DAPL and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
On September 27, PICEL joined with Professor Ezra Rosser and the Environmental Law Society to host a panel discuss on the issues around the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). At the end of August and in September a NoDAPL movement began to grow and other tribes, environmentalists, and other supportive people joined with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to protest the construction of DAPL.
