Women's Health and Human Rights in the Western Hemisphere
The Women and the Law Program collaborates with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to promote human rights norms and domestic policy measures that will improve the health of women around the world. The purpose of this collaboration is to cultivate legal practitioners and public health advocates who are well versed in international human rights law, as well as attentive to the particular health needs and concerns of women in the PAHO Region (Western Hemisphere).
We are working in partnership to develop a training program for public health personnel addressing domestic, regional and international human rights norms and standards relevant to promotion of women's health. The training program will draw attention to PAHO activities and national public health strategies that are improving the health of women in the region. In addition, the partners will be working together to develop a PAHO educational module on Human Rights and Health: Maternal Mortality.
Washington College of Law students will have the opportunity to work on this project with WCL faculty and PAHO personnel by assisting with legal and policy research and participating in dissemination strategies. This project forms a component of PAHO's larger collaboration with the Washington College of Law, pursuant to an agreement signed between the University and PAHO/WHO in 2009. This five year collaboration will result in increased cooperation and collaboration on educational materials, research projects and student development.
