Collaboration Between the Women and the Law Program and the World Bank
Project on Health Legislation, Human Rights, and Gender
In October 2014, the World Bank’s Nordic Trust Fund awarded the Women and the Law Program $10,000 to explore how legal tools can be leveraged to strengthen the World Bank’s approach to reducing high rates of maternal mortality worldwide and addressing the health needs of LGBTI persons. Under the grant, the Women and Law Program wrote two reports for use by World Bank Staff. The first report, “Operationalizing the Right to Health: Lessons from the Latin America and Caribbean Region,” explores decades of efforts by various international institutions, in particular the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO-WHO), to operationalize the right to health in Latin America and the Caribbean. The second, “Collaboration Among Academia, the NTF of the World Bank and Other International Organizations to Promote Human Rights Based Frames in Development,” proposes a series of recommendations for increasing collaboration among legal academia, the World Bank and other international organizations in the areas of gender, health legislation and human rights.
