Campus Offices Go Green with Help from Eco-Sense

Vice president of campus life Gail Hanson’s office has become the first cabinet-level office to be eco-certified by Eco-Sense, AU’s influential environmental club.

The campus life division aims to have 75 percent of its offices certified by the end of the academic year, said senior Casey Roe, Eco-Sense’s environmental policy director, who created the program in spring 2008. Already certified are the  Academic Support Center, Housing and Dining, and Judicial Affairs and Mediation Services.

To pass inspection, an office must meet at least 30 of 45 criteria, including the use of recycled paper and two-sided printing. Faculty and staff are required to attend an hour-long training.

The Center for Teaching Excellence and the Office of New Student Programs were the first AU offices to be certified.

Three other university offices — the Career Center, Student Government, and University Communications and Marketing — are currently working toward certification, and 15 other offices are interested in starting the process.
