AU Unplugged:  Our Wireless Campus

Wireless network usage on AU's campus has significantly increased with more than 3000 users connecting per day. This represents a fifty percent growth over last year. We hope you have benefitted from recent efforts, described below, to improve the campus wireless network infrastructure.

Stronger, More Reliable Connections in Many Campus Buildings

The installation of additional wireless access points allows for many more wireless connections throughout campus buildings with stronger signals and faster speeds. Wireless network connectivity is closely monitored by OIT engineers, so they can quickly resolve any problems that you might be encountering and identify locations that are reaching capacity. This allows us to be more proactive, but please contact the IT Help Desk to inform us of any campus locations where wireless service is problematic for you.

Emphasis was focused on improving wireless connectivity in two of the most popular campus locations: Bender Library and the Ward Circle Building. Capacity quadrupled in the Bender Library after additional access points were added. In fact, 458 users were connected within the Library on December 7, 2008 - a new record. Capacity doubled in the Ward Circle Building, where many AU classes are held. Additional access points were also installed during the fall semester in the following other high capacity areas:

  • Bender Arena
  • Centennial Hall
  • Federal Hall
  • The lower level of the Kogod School of Business
  • New Lecture Hall
  • Sports Center Annex

Ability to Roam Between Buildings

You can now roam between buildings with your laptop without being prompted to login again to the network. Authentication may still be required if your computer has been turned off for more than 20 minutes.

Easier Process for Accessing AU's Wireless Network

The process for accessing the AU wireless network is substantially easier. Just look for eaglenet in your computer's list of available wireless networks. No security key is necessary – just login to Cisco Clean Access to perform the "health check" as usual.

Remember: faculty and staff members can create a temporary visitor account for short-term guests by logging into the my.american.edu portal and clicking the Technology link and Visitor Account Creation. Then, they can enjoy the wired and wireless network services.

EagleBuck$ Printing Services

You can also configure your laptop to print directly to most campus computer lab or residence hall printers using the University Library's new EagleBuck$ printing service. Please visit the EagleBuck$ Printing Website for more information.
