May 2014 - Construction completed (May 2014).

Past Updates

January 10, 2014 - Work in the terrazzo and occupied areas of the building is expected to be completed by January 17.

Exterior work continues, including the completion of the access ramp, sidewalk, and hardscape at the southeast entrance of the building.

Egress path from the terrace and first-floor entry at the north side of the building is complete. Concrete pour for a permanent walkway at the west side of the building is complete.

Painting, base work, millwork, and glass panel installation are under way.

Security infrastructure is being finalized, and is expected to be completed by January 10.

Furniture installation is expected to be completed by January 10.

Landscaping work is expected to be completed in the spring.

November 8, 2013 - Exterior waterproofing nears completion.

Landscaping/hardscape work continues.

Drywall installation is 85 percent complete.

Exterior framing and sheeting for the new addition is complete and stone placement has begun on the stair tower.

The lower curtain wall framing is complete, and installation of glass is approximately 80 percent complete.

New steam line construction is complete; chilled water and steam connection is under construction.

Storm water management system is under construction.

October 25, 2013 - Exterior waterproofing nears completion.

Landscaping/hardscaping work has begun.

Drywall installation is 75 percent complete.

Exterior framing and sheeting for the new addition is complete and awaits stone placement.

The curtain wall framing is complete, and installation of glass is expected to begin in the next two to three weeks.

October 4, 2013 - Waterproofing is 85 percent complete.

New landscaping/hardscape plans are complete and work is under way.

Interior wall framing is almost complete. Drywall installation is 30 percent complete.

Exterior framing for the new addition is complete and exterior sheeting is nearing completion.

Curtain wall installation is under way.

The new steam line construction is approximately 70 percent complete, and is expected to be completed by the end of October.

All electrical vaults are complete and feeder wires pulled.

Sigal construction trailer has been relocated along with their temporary electric service.

Installation of storm water filter is approximately 50 percent complete.

September 23, 2013 - Interior concrete pours and new CMU wall construction is complete.

Waterproofing is 85 percent complete.

Work has begun on new landscaping and hardscaping.

Interior wall framing continues and is approximately 95 percent complete, with only the third floor remaining to be completed early next week. Drywall installation will begin next week.

Exterior framing for the new addition is approximately 90 percent complete and exterior sheeting is being installed.

Main ductwork installation is near 90 percent complete.

Domestic water line installation has started and is scheduled to be completed in the next week to 10 days.

New steam line construction is approximately 50 percent complete, and is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

August 30, 2013 - Interior concrete pours and new CMU wall construction are complete.

Waterproofing is 65 percent complete.

New landscaping/hardscape plans are complete.

Telephone/data locations and audio visual applications/design integration are complete, and are being coordinated with the building infrastructure and furniture plans.

Interior wall framing continues and is approximately 75 percent complete.

Exterior framing for the new addition is approximately 60 percent complete.

HVAC equipment is on site and main ductwork installation is approaching 85 percent completion.

Domestic water line installation has been scheduled.

The new steam line construction has begun with the steam vault already installed. The steam line construction is expected to be completed by the end of September 2013.

All electrical vaults are complete.

Fire proofing of structural steel is complete.

Roof installation for the addition is complete.

August 14, 2013 - Interior concrete stair pours and new CMU wall construction is complete. 

Waterproofing is 60 percent complete.

New landscaping/hardscape plans are complete, and scheduling is under way.

Telephone/data locations and audio visual applications/design integration is complete.

Wall framing continues.

HVAC equipment is on site and main ductwork installation is nearly 70 percent complete.

Domestic water line installation has been scheduled.

New steam line construction is expected to begin at the end of August, and finished by the end of September.

The emergency generator vault is complete.

Electrical transformer and switch gear vaults are complete.

Roof installation for the addition begins next week.

July 16, 2013 - Building concrete floor pours and new CMU wall construction is complete.

Lightweight concrete for the theater stage and seating area has been placed.

Waterproofing to allow backfill of the areaway and generator vault is 60 percent complete.

Tree removal has been completed.

Wall framing continues.

HVAC equipment is on site, and ductwork installation is approaching 60 percent complete.

The new steam line construction work is expected to begin at the end of July, and be finished at the end of September. Both steam and chilled water work are scheduled to be under construction at the same time.

The emergency generator vault is complete, and transformer vault is on site and scheduled for installation by the beginning of August.

June 20, 2013 - Building concrete floor pours are complete, including light weight concrete for the theater stage and seating area.

Waterproofing to allow backfill of the area-way and generator vault is expected to begin in the next two weeks.

May 24, 2013 - Roof deck concrete pour is expected to begin at the end of this week. 

Construction of the new steam line to service the building is expected to being on June 17 and be completed by the end of September. 

Construction of a new transformer vault is under way and is expected to be completed in the next two weeks. Utility work, including new electrical service, steam and chilled water interconnections, and storm water management system are under way.   

Interior shoring work is proceeding in preparation for the demolition phase of interior walls. 

Research for the removal and reuse of leftover marble pieces continues. 

Necessary permits are being obtained to remove two oak and sycamore trees located around and between McKinley and Bender Library. The trees will be removed as soon as the permits are granted. 

The walkway between McKinley Building and Bender Library will be closed after graduation for the entire summer to accommodate underground utility improvements, landscaping/hard-scaping, and other construction activities. 

Interior mechanical and electrical systems work is scheduled to begin May 24.

Primary steel structuring has been erected in preparation for the infill addition to the building.

AU Grounds Operation is procuring the necessary permits to remove the two oak and sycamore trees located around and between McKinley and Bender Library. The tree removal permits await approval.

April 5, 2013 - Exterior ducts and area way excavation are under way in preparation for utility construction and concrete pours in the coming weeks.

Utility work is expected to be completed after graduation.

Steel beams for the infill addition continue to be erected.

Shoring work is proceeding to allow interior demolition to begin.

Storm water management system construction is scheduled for May 2013.

Walkway between McKinley Building and Bender Library will be closed to all except construction traffic beginning in late May for underground utility improvements, landscaping/hardscape, and other construction work. Work is expected to continue all summer.


March 22, 2013 - Steel beams continue to be erected.

March 7, 2013 - Terrace level concrete slab has been installed.

February 28, 2013 - Underground plumbing and storm piping work is completed and has inspected.

Installation of windows continues.

February 6, 2013 - Window installation continues.

Pouring of concrete for installation of foundation continues.

Structural steel fabrication is complete, and its installation is expected to begin after completion of foundation work.

January 30, 2013 - Abatement of the exterior chilled water and steam lines is complete.

Window installation has begun in the existing building.

Pouring of concrete for installation of foundation continues.

January 24, 2013 - Abatement of the exterior chilled water/steam lines is expected to be completed by January 23.

Terrace windows are being installed currently.

Foundation work continues.

Steel girders are expected to be erected within the next two weeks.

Survey of the marble façade stone pieces is complete, and options for reuse are being considered.

Concept landscaping and hardscape landscaping plan is complete, and discussions with the civil engineer to develop a final plan is under way.

December 19, 2012 - Construction will continue throughout winter break, with breaks scheduled for December 24-25, 31, and January 1.

Foundation excavation continues.

December 12, 2012 - Construction will continue through the winter break, except on December 24, 25, 31, and January 1.

Foundation work and concrete placement is expected to be completed by the end of the week.

Underground utility identification and marking continues.

December 5, 2012 - Construction will continue throughout winter break, with breaks scheduled for December 24-25, 31, and January 1.

November 28, 2012 - The start of foundation work and concrete placement has been postponed until location, identification, and marking of existing telecommunication ducts/conduits, cabling, and underground utility are complete.

November 16, 2012 - The demolition phase is complete.

Underpinning (strengthening and stabilizing the foundation) of the existing structure was completed. Additional foundation work is expected to begin November 19.

The remaining mature trees on the south side of the building have been relocated to the quad side of Battelle-Tompkins.

Underground utility identification and marking is under way.

November 7, 2012 - The large magnolia tree located at the northeast corner of the building was removed. In its place, twelve new trees will be planted on campus. The remaining crate myrtle trees on the south side of the building soon will be relocated to other appropriate area on campus.

The elevator pit underpinning is scheduled to begin Nov. 7.

Foundation work is scheduled to begin Nov. 19. Underground utility identification and marking is under way. 

October 24, 2012 - Trees located on the south side of the building are scheduled to be relocated this week.

Foundation work is expected to begin in mid-November.

October 19, 2012 -Demolition of building interior continues, including the basement level, and is expected to be completed this week.

All trees salvaged from the removal of the gas line have been relocated to other areas of the campus.

Stone removal process is expected to be completed by October 26, with debris to be removed shortly thereafter and sent to recycling facilities.

October 10, 2012 - Demolition of the building's interior continues.

Installation of exterior stairs is complete.

Minor redesign of classrooms and other areas is complete.

Trees salvaged from the removal of the gas line are expected to be relocated early next week.

Stone removal process is expected to be completed by Oct. 26, with debris to be removed shortly thereafter.

Demolition and removal phase of work is expected to be completed by mid-November.

Foundation work is expected to begin in mid-November.

October 3, 2012 - Demolition of building interior continues.

Stone removal process resumed on Wednesday, Oct. 3.

Minor redesign and expansion of classrooms continues.

September 27, 2012 - Demolition of the building's interior continues.

Structural steel is being installed and inspected to allow stone removal and interior wall demolition to continue. Stone removal will begin Oct. 1 and continue for approximately two weeks.

Existing trees on the east side of McKinley have been relocated to the new Quadraplex green space. Trees on the south side of the building also will be relocated once the gas line is removed.

Holiday work schedule: Thursday and Friday, Nov. 22, 23 - holidays; Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 24, 25 – holidays; Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 31, Jan. 1 – holidays. Work will resume Dec. 26 – 28. 

September 19, 2012 - Demolition continues, with stone removal scheduled to resume next week.

September 11, 2012 - General demolition continues and is nearing completion.

Stone removal will resume later this week. A supplemental structural support system will be installed to allow demolition and stone removal to proceed in a safe and orderly manner.

Five trees from the east side of the building were removed and relocated to the Quadraplex Project landscaping area. Trees on the south side of the building will be relocated soon. 

September 5, 2012 - General demolition continues on the flat roof slab, as interior demolition nears completion.

A permanent, steel roof support is being installed. Once completed, the stone façade will be removed.

Removal and relocation of five trees from the east side of the building to the Quadraplex Project landscaping area is expected to be completed by Friday, Sept. 7.

August 29, 2012 - General demolition continues.

Selected trees will be relocated from the East and South sides of the building to other areas of the campus. AU's landscape architects are coordinating this effort.

August 22, 2012 - Scaffolding is in place and the exterior stone removal process will commence this week.

The slate roof has been removed in the northwest section of the building where the new addition will be built.

The flat roof also will be removed shortly.

Official groundbreaking is scheduled for Saturday, October 20.

August 15, 2012 - Scaffolding for stone removal is being installed this week.

Stone removal work is expected to begin next week.

August 8, 2012 - Demolition work to the interior of the building continues as part of its overall renovation and modernization.

Construction traffic plan has been reviewed by Public Safety and finalized for implementation.

July 24, 2012 - The construction teams are installing additional signage to direct pedestrians around the job site.

The Construction Traffic Management Plan for the site is in place and operating successfully.

Stone removal activities on the site have been suspended until the roof can be removed and supported properly.

Installation of the temporary electric services for the site is scheduled for next week. A temporary overnight power outage during the installation will affect Bender Library. Arrangements already have been made with the library staff.

July 18, 2012 - Tree relocation and removals are on hold pending further evaluations.

July 12, 2012 - Construction fencing has been reinforced after suffering damage from the recent storm.

  • Additional directional signage will be installed on the fencing to help people navigate around the construction site.
  • Removal of trees on the site has been delayed due to recent weather conditions.

May 15, 2012 – The McKinley building on the quad will undergo extensive renovations to make it the new home for the School of Communication. Demolition and site preparation work is expected to begin in late May.

During the construction process, there may be temporary inconveniences that occasionally affect our neighbors and the university community. We will always strive to minimize the impact of our construction activity.
