About Middle States
American University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. This organization requires institutions such as AU to meet standards related to best practices in higher education. These standards are known as the Characteristics of Excellence.
To remain accredited, institutions undergo a Self-Study every 10 years, and submit a Periodic Review Report at the 5 year point between self-studies. American University submitted its most recent Self-Study in 2003-2004 and is scheduled to submit its Periodic Review Report in June 2009.
