American University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). It is a voluntary non-governmental organization “dedicated to quality assurance and improvement through accreditation via peer evaluation.” MSCHE requires institutions such as American University to meet standards related to best practices in higher education. These standards are known as the Characteristics of Excellence.
In order to be re-accredited institutions undergo a self-study every 10 years, and submit a periodic review report at the 5 year point between self-studies. American University submitted periodic review report in June 2009 and is currently undergoing self-study, with a visiting team expected to visit campus in 2014.
