Alumni Turn Out to See President Kerwin at the George Washington Masonic Memorial

Jeff Watts

Proving that President Kerwin, SPA/BA '71, can still fill a room, more than 200 alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff came to Alexandria on the evening of April 24 to hear the university's 14th president speak at the beautiful and historic George Washington Masonic Memorial.

Guests enjoyed remarks from Dr. Kerwin, as well as Dr. Thomas Minar, vice president of development and alumni relations, and Chip Griffin, SPA/BA '94, president of the AU Alumni Board. The group enjoyed a special treat with the viewing of JFK at AU: Building Peace for All Time. The video, created by AU's own film crew in honor of the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's historic peace speech delivered on campus at the 1963 commencement ceremony, featured snippets of the speech and interviews with graduates and AU faculty. In addition to the tasty food and drink, many guests took advantage of the complimentary tours to the Memorial's trademark Observation Deck with 360 degree views of the District.

Prior to the Presidential Reception, President Neil Kerwin '71 and Ann Kerwin, also a member of the class of '71, hosted a special Celebrating Philanthropy reception to honor and thank AU's loyal donors and volunteers. Members of the 1893 Society, Helen Palmer Kettler Society, and President's Circle joined fellow alums and supporters at this exclusive event. Guests were treated to cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and a performance by the American University Chamber Singers, led by Associate Professor Daniel Abraham.
