Greetings from LaTanya Sothern

Happy New Year, fellow alumni! I’m excited to be your new Alumni Association President, and I look forward to working with you. I’ve been a member of the AU Alumni Board since 2018 and am both honored and humbled to collaboratively lead this group for the 2023-25 term.

As we look ahead to the culmination of our Change Can’t Wait Campaign, I see much to be proud of and even more excitement and success in the future for our university. Our 145,000+ proud alumni worldwide play a big role in AU’s success, and I’m excited to work with you to support the institution.

The new year also means change on the American University Alumni Board. This month, we will formally thank the following outgoing members for their service to the university community:

●          Elliot Bell-Krasner, SPA/MPP ’12
●          Melanie Brown, CAS/BA ’02
●          Peter Brusoe, SPA/PhD ’12

These alumni have served our alma mater well, and I thank them for their service on behalf of the board. I also know that we can all look forward to their continued involvement.

We also welcome new Alumni Board members at the beginning of each year. The following alumni are joining this term, and we are excited to see all that they will contribute:

Additionally, Daniel Leon-Davis, SIS/BA ’13, Chris Kalna, Kogod / BSBA ’08, Kogod/ MBA ’19, Don Mike Mendoza, SOC / BA ’10, SOC/MA ’17, and Rachel Tabakman-Plancher, SPA/BA ’03, are remaining on or rejoining the board to serve second terms.

I’m also very pleased to share that joining me on the executive committee this year are Patty Caballero, SOC/BA ’91, Kogod/MBA ’00, vice president of operations; Brett Zongker, SOC/BA ’03, SOC/MA ’04, vice president of external relations; and Bradley White, SPA/BA ’99, WCL/JD ’07, secretary. I know this group of very committed volunteers will provide leadership and guidance in the coming years.

Finally, on behalf of myself and the Alumni Board, I send my sincerest gratitude and thanks to outgoing president Jonathan Mathis, Ph.D., Kogod/BSBA ’04. Jonathan has been an engaged advocate of the university community and has been extremely generous with giving his time, resources, and talents to AU throughout the years. I know he will continue to be a dedicated leader and thought partner through his service as the immediate past president of the Alumni Board. Jonathan, we are all very grateful for your commitment and leadership.

Please join us in supporting AU!  There are many ways to help AU and our students, and each of you can make a difference. Visit american.edu/alumni/volunteer to learn how. Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle!

Best wishes,

LaTanya S. Sothern, SOC/BA ’92
