- A native of South Korea, Sung ah Kim-Medwin studied piano performance at Seoul National University before coming to the United States. She received her B.M. from Ithaca College and her M.M. and D.M.A. in piano performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music, where she was also awarded the Performer’s Certificate. She maintains an active teaching and performance schedule in the Washington D.C. area, and her repertoire exhibits her keen interest in late Romantic piano compositions by Alexander Scriabin and Nicholas Medtner as well as 20th century music; she has premiered new compositions with the Eastman Musica Nova Ensemble and Duke University New Music Ensemble as well as performing new student compositions at Montgomery College. Her teachers include Natalya Antonova for whom Dr. Kim-Medwin was a teaching assistant, Thomas Schumacher, Malcom Bilson, Simone Pedroni, Phiroze Mehta, and Mary Ann Covert. Sung ah also teaches at Montgomery College, the International School of Music and has taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Eastman School of Music.
