AU Announces Fall Semester Vaccine Requirements for Students

As American University plans for a return to in-person operations this fall, the university announced today that students who will reside on campus, or come to campus for any reason, will required to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

In a message to the community, President Sylvia M. Burwell indicated that this move is an important component of a safe return to campus. “Robust vaccinations in our community will enable us to expand activities and interactions that enrich the educational, research, and social experiences that are fundamental to AU,” she said.

Any COVID-19 vaccine authorized for use in the United States will be accepted, and AU is seeking further guidance for international students who may have received a vaccine that is not yet approved in the U.S. Students will be able to request an exemption from vaccine requirements for medical or religious reasons following existing protocols.

With COVID-19 safety precautions in place, and a vaccine requirement, AU looks forward to welcoming students back for a robust and energizing fall semester.
