AU boasts about 1,900 dedicated staff members. Meet one here: Rima Sifri, assistant director of administration and community training coordinator, American University Police Department (AUPD).

I’ve worked at AU for almost 20 years. Before that, I worked in security.

My job as captain for AUPD includes overseeing hiring and recruitment, storing property and evidence, budgeting, and community engagement. I often table at events and lead emergency preparedness presentations where I can talk with the campus community. I also ensure automated external defibrillators across campus are in working order. I love my job.

A typical day includes getting out into the community as much as I can, lots of meetings, and helping colleagues from my desk. My office is located in the lower level of the Don Myers Technology and Innovation Building. Our office is open 24/7. All people have to do to get help is hit the red button on the intercom and an officer will come out and meet them.

My go-to lunch spot is Bethesda Market, where I order a turkey panini with onion, tomatoes, and mayo at the deli. I also like Chipotle. My go-to drink is a Diet Coke. My favorite place on campus to steal a quiet moment is the Kay Spiritual Life Center or on a bench somewhere outdoors. Campus is at its prettiest during cherry blossom season and when the tulips pop during Welcome Week. Our grounds team does such a great job.

I show my AU spirit by bringing positivity every day while helping people. Even though so much of my job is serious, I balance the seriousness with the education piece and have some fun too. I found my community at AU by meeting so many great people on campus and learning about them.

The person who helped show me the ropes is Phil Morse, assistant vice president of university police services, emergency management, and transportation programs. He has shown me what a true leader is and what a good human looks like. He smiles at me every day and says thank you often.

I don’t have a favorite day of the workweek. Every day is a good day at AU. My work-from-home rituals include taking a walk in the morning to start my day off right. My two black cats, Hocus and Pocus, are often by my side too. When I’m not at work, you can find me taking a walk around my neighborhood, reading, playing with my cats, and spending time with my family. I’m also a firefighter and EMT in Maryland.

The most famous face I’ve seen on campus is President Barack Obama, who has come to campus three times. I have had the honor of working with the US Secret Service to ensure his safety during each visit.

The last great book I read was Cross Down by James Patterson. The last great show I watched was Matlock. I am a huge fan of old TV shows. The last great meal I ate was fettuccine alla bolognese when I took the trip of a lifetime to Italy.

If I wasn’t working here, I’d be a travel guide. I love to travel and learn about new places. But my job at AU is best because I get to positively impact someone’s life every day.
