American University requires full COVID-19 vaccinations for all students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors.
All students, faculty and staff who come to campus for any reason, enter university-operated facilities, or participate in university-sponsored activities must be vaccinated and boosted against Covid-19 and upload documentation.
This includes full-time and part-time students, faculty, and staff; undergraduates and graduate students; residential and non-residential students; adjunct faculty members; visiting scholars and researchers; affiliates/volunteers; and full-time contract workers.
Guests and visitors must be vaccinated. Please see that section for more details.
- Vaccines. Any COVID-19 vaccine authorized for use in the US will be accepted.
- Boosters. Members of the campus community must receive boosters when they become eligible and upload documentation. Deadlines are below.
- International students and scholars. In accordance with CDC guidelines, AU accepts vaccines approved by the World Health Organization (WHO). How to Upload Documentation
Note: As with other required immunizations, once proof of a full vaccine series and booster is uploaded and on file with the university, it does not need to be re-uploaded annually.
Faculty and Staff: Log into the AU Forward Portal and click on COVID-19 Proof of Vaccination.
Students: Go to your Student Health Portal (AU log-in required).
- Click on “My Forms" and then “COVID-19 Vaccination Form” or "Covid-19 Booster."
- To record the initial vaccine (under COVID-19 Vaccination Form), look for the appropriate vaccine (eg Pfizer, Moderna or J&J) and enter the date/s you received your vaccine. If you received a vaccine that is not listed but is approved by the WHO, complete the fields with the dates you received the vaccine and the name of the vaccine you received.
- Submit a digital copy of your COVID-19 vaccination or booster card/record.
- Tip for iPhone Photos users: Records must be in the form of a .JPG or .PDF file. If you take an iPhone photo, you must convert to one of these file types before it can be uploaded. Please refer to this information on converting the photo.
- To record a booster (under "COVID-19 Booster"), follow instructions. If you're an international student or scholar with an initial WHO-approved vaccine and you're uncertain how to receive or record the booster, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Not sure if your vaccination status is on file? Students, go to the Student Health Portal > My Profile > Download Immunization History. You will see your COVID-19 vaccination proof there if it is on file with the university.
Exemptions are only available for medical or religious reasons, and must follow university protocols. There are no exceptions.
For vaccination: Students may request an exemption from the Covid-19 vaccination requirement for medical or religious reasons, following existing university protocols. The deadline to submit this request for Fall 2022 was August 1, 2022.
- Religious exemption. Students must follow the university’s procedures for requesting religious exemptions for immunizations. Students who previously received a religious exemption for immunizations do not need to submit another exemption request for the Covid-19 vaccination.
- Medical exemption. At American University, a medical exemption from COVID-19 immunization MAY be allowed if the student’s physician completes a medical exemption request form indicating why this immunization or booster is medically inadvisable. The COVID-19 vaccination medical exemption request form can be downloaded and printed here. This request is reviewed by the university’s Medical Director, who determines if the medical condition meets criteria for exemption in accordance with the most up-to-date CDC recommendations. For booster shots:
- Students with existing university-approved vaccination exemptions. You are exempt from boosters. You do not need to reapply.
- Students who are vaccinated and now wish to receive a booster exemption. Under limited circumstances, a medical exemption may be considered if a student's physician provides a detailed letter indicating an adverse reaction to the initial vaccination.

Where to find vaccines and/or boosters
These are widely available. Here's where to go and how to search for sites:
- Vaccinations and booster shots are readily available near campus, including pharmacies and grocery stores.
- Go to the CDC’s vaccine location webpage, which includes search boxes for state health departments and the national Vaccine Finder website; or,
- Go to the national Vaccine Finder website, which will direct you to relevant locations in your vicinity; or,
- Go to your jurisdiction’s website for Covid-19 vaccination (by searching on your jurisdiction’s name and Covid vaccination) to see options; or,
- Ask your personal health provider. Some doctors’ offices offer pre-registration at clinics, or if not, can advise you on services in your area.
Vaccine distribution is managed by federal and state agencies.
