Transportation From the Airport to AU

There are several different ways to get from the airport to American University. You are encouraged to take a taxi if you have a lot of luggage. Most locations in the District of Columbia are accessible by public transportation.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Taxi Service

24-hour Taxi service from Dulles airport is provided exclusively by Washington Flyer Taxi.

Ride App Pickup

Pickups from Uber, Lyft, and Via are available on the lowest level of the airport. More information about where to locate your pickup can be found here.

Metro

Washington Dulles International Airport Station is connected directly to the airport. Take the Silver Line train to Metro Center station and switch to Red Line towards the Tenleytown-American University station, then take the American University Shuttle from the metro station to campus.

Super Shuttle Shared Van

Group van service is provided by Super Shuttle "blue vans." Vans are shared and each person in the van is taken to their destination.

Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI)

Taxi Service

The BWI Airport taxi stand is located just outside the baggage claim area of the Lower Level Terminal, near doors 5 and 13.

Ride App Pickup

Super Shuttle Shared Van

Group van service is provided by Super Shuttle "blue vans." Vans are shared and each person in the van is taken to their destination.

Bus to Metro

The MTA Commuter Bus 201 runs from BWI airport to the Shady Grove metro station. From the Shady Grove metro station, take the metro train to the Tenleytown-American University station. Then take the American University Shuttle to campus.

Train to Metro

The BWI airport offers free and frequent shuttle service to the MARC train station 24 hours a day. Fare Information for the MARC Train can be found here.

The shuttle service to the MARC train station is picked up on the lower level, outside of the baggage claim. Take the MARC Train to Union Station. After arriving at Union Station, take the red line towards Twinbrook and arrive at the Tenleytown-American University station. Finally, take the American University Shuttle to campus.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

Taxi Service

A variety of taxicab companies serve Reagan National Airport. There is a taxi dispatcher at each terminal to assist passengers.

Metro

The metro stops adjacent to Terminals B and C. Both the blue and the yellow lines stop at Reagan National Airport. From the airport metro station, take the train to the Tenleytown-American University station, then take the American University Shuttle to campus.
