Bio
Emily Martin is a Program Coordinator at American University’s Women & Politics Institute. She is currently pursuing an MA in Political Science from AU’s School of Public Affairs.
In her role at WPI, Emily helps recruit for and coordinate the Women, Policy and Political Leadership (WPPL) Certificate Program. She also serves as a teaching assistant for WPPL classes. She is a contributing writer for the WeLead Reader, WPI’s weekly newsletter packed with news and research about women in politics. She also provides research assistance for WPI Executive Director Betsy Fischer Martin’s “Gender on the Debate Stage” series at Gender on the Ballot, “a nonpartisan project to examine and contextualize gender dynamics during the 2020 election cycle.”
Emily is a 2020 Finalist for the Presidential Management Fellowship and will pursue an appointment at a federal government agency in the Washington, D.C. area after graduation. Her academic interests include gender and sexuality in politics, social movements, women’s political behavior and participation, feminist political theory, healthcare policy, and HIV/AIDS policy and advocacy.
Emily holds bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and English from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Northern Colorado, respectively. She is a member of the national political science honor society Pi Sigma Alpha.
