Bynum’s research examines social movements in Burma/Myanmar with a particular focus on the history of student movements in the country. Her dissertation is a study of the student-led 1988 uprising and the subsequent political activism of that generation of students. Theoretically, she is interested in understanding how repression informs collective identity and, in turn, collective action over a sustained period of time. She recently completed fieldwork in Burma/Myanmar, interviewing former and current student activists. Prior to graduate school, she worked as a researcher with local human rights organizations on the Thailand-Burma border and as a teacher inside Burma. Bynum earned her M.A. in Social Justice and Human Rights from Arizona State University and has a B.A. in International Affairs from The George Washington University.
