Washington Semester Program Summer
American University’s Washington Semester Program (WSP) Summer is an opportunity for students to spend a summer in DC, work in a DC internship, and earn academic credit. Now in its 75th year, WSP has enabled more than 50,000 students from hundreds of domestic and international universities to live, work, and study in Washington, DC. 

The WSP motto “DC Is Our Classroom” highlights the unique value of the program—combining experiential learning from a nationally ranked university with structured and supervised internships at some of DC’s most dynamic institutions. 

WSP Summer features:

  • A 4 days-a-week internship, plus comprehensive internship search support
  • Internship supervision by experienced AU faculty and administrators
  • Career readiness and workplace skill training
  • A choice of three 3-credit in-person career exploration courses:
    • Politics and Law
    • International Affairs
    • Social Justice
  • Access to premium apartment housing steps from AU’s campus, or if available, AU on-campus or off-campus housing resources.

WSP Summer students enjoy the services and benefits of full-time AU students, including academic advising, the Academic Support & Access Center, University Library, Student Counseling Center, Student Health Center, Student Fitness Centers, and much more.

Experienced WSP faculty and administrators work with you and your internship supervisors to help you have a great internship experience. 

We’ll help you develop the skills you need to be successful in your internship and future job—skills like communication, professionalism, teamwork, and conflict resolution—through a mix of career exploration workshops, professional skills building sessions, alumni and employer networking events, and advising with our dedicated staff.

WSP Summer courses focus on internship support and career exploration. You’ll choose one of three 3-credit course sections divided by professional field. Your experienced AU faculty member will prepare you to meet with national and global experts to discuss their career paths and professional experiences. For example,

Selective Washington, DC organizations require applications as early as September. To be eligible for competitive internships that may mandate security clearances and follow up, apply early. Admission is on a rolling basis.

  • February 1: Priority Application Deadline. Apply early for better access to competitive internships.
  • March 15: Priority Housing Deadline. TurnKey Housing is guaranteed if you submit your deposit and request housing before this deadline. After this date, housing is provided on a rolling basis as space is available.
  • April 1: Final Application Deadline
  • April 15: Final Program Deposit* & Housing Deadline
