American University letterhead

May 2, 2025

We are pleased to announce that the Center for Diversity & Inclusion (CDI) is transitioning to the Center for Student Belonging (CSB) as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance student belonging and thriving. This transition reflects the evolving needs of our student body and the broader AU community, ensuring that all students feel a strong sense of belonging and support.

Over the past several months, the Center for Diversity & Inclusion (CDI) has engaged in community listening sessions, which began in earnest in November 2024, and conducted a needs assessment to better understand how we can foster greater belonging, inclusion, and create a campus environment where all students can thrive.

These conversations reinforced the importance of a redirection that strengthens our commitment to student engagement. The Center for Student Belonging emphasizes our dedication to ensuring all students at AU feel seen, valued, and supported. The mission of CSB is to serve as a principal leader, resource and support in fostering a campus environment where students feel a profound sense of belonging, connection, and the ability to thrive. Through education, outreach, and advocacy, we create opportunities for students to grow at AU and beyond.

As part of this mission, CSB remains committed to:

  • Serving as a Resource: Offering guidance, support, student training, and information to help students navigate personal challenges.

  • Fostering Inclusive Spaces: Creating environments where all students feel welcomed, included, and empowered to contribute.

  • Enhancing Student Success: Connecting students with the resources needed to support their academic persistence and personal development.

  • Collaborating Across Campus: Developing partnerships with university offices, student groups, alumni, and external partners to develop meaningful growth opportunities for all students.

The transition to the Center for Student Belonging is currently in progress, and we will continue to provide updates to the campus community as details are finalized. Our priority is to ensure a smooth transition that maintains a strong focus on student support, connection, belonging, and empowerment. We appreciate your patience and engagement as we embark on this next chapter together.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please feel free to reach out to the Division of Student Affairs. We look forward to continuing our work in supporting and uplifting all students at American University.
