California

California offers a two-day non-UBE exam, which is comprised of:

  • One 90-minute performance test which takes place in a "closed universe" and features instructions, factual data, cases, statutes and other reference material supplied by examiners.
  • Five 60-minute essay questions, which are specific to California law and cover the following subjects:
    • Agency & Partnerships
    • California Civil Procedure
    • California Community Property
    • California Evidence
    • California Professional Responsibility
    • California Wills & Succession
    • Corporations & Limited Liability Companies
    • Remedies
    • Trusts
    • All MBE subjects as detailed below
  • Two hundred multiple-choice Multistate Bar Exam (MBE) questions, covering the following seven subjects:
    • Constitutional Law
    • Contracts
    • Criminal Law & Procedure
    • Evidence
    • Federal Civil Procedure
    • Real Property
    • Torts


Scoring: The MBE score is weighted as 50% of the total score, while the written portions accounts for the other 50%. A combined score of 1390 on a 2000 point scale is required to pass.


Filing Deadlines: The early application deadline for the February Bar Exam is November 1, and the late filing deadline is January 2. The early application deadline for the July Bar Exam is April 1, and the late filing deadline is June 1.


Fees: The fee for first-time takers is $677 if filed before the early filing deadline. The fee for applications submitted during November (for February exams) and April (for July exams) is $727. The fee for applications submitting during December (for February exams) and May (for July exams) is $927. All applicants must pay a fee of $551 for a moral character determination. If you intend to use a laptop to take the exam, the laptop fee is $153.


Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam: A scaled score of 86 on the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE) is required for admission to the bar.
