Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance, and Regulatory Harmonization under the USMCA

Eduardo Bertoni, Director of the Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law, participated in the 9th High-Level Forum on Innovation for the Mexican Legislative Branch, held in Washington, D.C.

During the panel on “Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance, and Regulatory Harmonization under the USMCA,” experts from academia, government, and the private sector explored emerging challenges related to AI governance, cross-border data flows, regulatory convergence, and the development of policy frameworks capable of fostering innovation while addressing ethical and societal risks.

As governments across the Americas increasingly confront questions surrounding artificial intelligence and digital governance, discussions such as these highlight the importance of integrating human rights principles into technological and regulatory decision-making.
