The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law was delighted to host Reed Brody on February, 28 2023 for a discussion about his recently published book “To Catch a Dictator”. Reed gave students, academics, attorneys and human rights advocates a deeper appreciation of the massive effort that it took to bring Hissène Habré, the former dictator of Chad, to justice while acknowledging the central role that Habré’s victims played in his eventual prosecution. We are incredibly grateful to have hosted Reed and are sure that his book will serve as a source of inspiration and roadmap for those seeking to hold the world’s most powerful leaders accountable for the commission of atrocity crimes.

On Wednesday, February 8th, 2023, AUWCL Re-Entry Clinic (REC) Student Attorneys Dahlia Inabinett and Sarah Farrell testified before the the Maryland Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee urging for independent oversight for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (Department of Corrections). This is the third year that a bill has been introduced seeking the establishment of a Correctional Ombudsman office in the Office of the Attorney General - SB 0087.

Professor Jayesh Rathod, director of AUWCL's Immigrant Justice Clinic, received the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) Great Teacher Award during the American Association of Law Schools (AALS) Annual Meeting in San Diego, California in January 2023. After receiving the award, Professor Rathod commented, "It was such a joy to be in the company of beloved ... colleagues, family, and friends. I'm so grateful to my nominators, who thought me worthy of this recognition, and to the AUWCL community, which has supported me and allowed me to grow and thrive as a teacher.
