Looking Ahead A New Strategic Plan to Drive the Next Five Years

As we complete AU's last strategic plan this year, AU is developing its new strategic plan for the next five years under the leadership of President Burwell.

To help develop the new strategic plan, President Burwell established the University Strategic Planning Committee, with representation from across the university. The Committee created subcommittees and working groups that are working on plans for nine strategic imperatives as the latest stage in the strategic planning process.

The strategic planning process reflects extensive consultation with, and input from, the AU community. Over the spring and fall of 2017, President Burwell met with over 1,000 faculty, students, staff, alumni, parents, and other community members to discuss what distinguishes AU, what AU should consider changing, and what should stay the same. During the fall of 2017 and in January 2018, the Strategic Planning Committee held campus-wide consultation sessions about proposed mission, vision, and values statements and campus leaders held consultation sessions on these statements at the 2017 Leadership Retreat and the 2018 Ann Ferren Conference. In April, President Burwell met with faculty in each of the schools and the Library, students, staff, the Faculty Senate, the leadership of the Staff Council, the Alumni Board, and the Parents Leadership Council. The Strategic Planning Committee also has conducted an analysis of AU's strengths and weaknesses and the opportunities and threats the University faces (this is commonly called a "SWOT" analysis) in partnership with the Education Advisory Board.

This iterative process of consultation has played an important role in shaping the draft plans so far, and the ongoing consultation will continue to shape the direction of the strategic plan. This consultation also contributed significantly to the development of President Burwell's inaugural address, where she laid out the five pillars that will guide AU's future and AU's next strategic plan.

The strength of the new plan lies in the collaboration of our community, and we hope all will feel empowered and excited to participate.
