AU Alumni Launch Startup Offering Hope for Critically Ill Patients

FindMyClinicalTrial, a startup launched by recent AU alum, empowers patients to access lifesaving clinical trials

Clinical trials open the door to promising new medications and therapies that aren’t yet widely available to the public. For patients facing advanced or hard-to-treat illnesses, these trials can mean more than just treatment—they can be a lifeline, and sometimes, a last shot at hope. But at the same time, figuring out how to locate and join a trial can be overwhelming to patients who are already overwhelmed. And on the other side, researchers often struggle to find the right participants to keep their trials going. 

This is the problem a group of American University students and alumni set out to solve. 

In January 2025, they launched FindMyClinicalTrial (FMCT), the world’s first user-friendly, AI-powered clinical trial search engine, powered by a simple, intuitive questionnaire. Users can visit the website or download the app on iOS and Android. Their mission is to help patients connect more easily with the right trials, and in doing so, to increase access to potentially life-saving care. 

“At FindMyClinicalTrial, through teamwork and collaboration, we are utilizing state-of-the-art technologies and generative AI to transform how patients discover and understand clinical trials,” says Javad Rajabi (MS computer science ’24), the startup’s Chief Technology Officer. “Our goal is to make this process more accessible, personalized, and empowering for everyone.” 

FindMyClinicalTrial’s founder and President Killian Lozach (BA international relations ’24) who is currently a Kogod MBA candidate teamed up with Rajabi, along with fellow College of Arts and Sciences students Genevieve Satzinger (BS computer science ’25) and Emma Briggs (BA strategic communication, BA literature ’25). 

Lozach first started thinking about the need for a product like FindMyClinicalTrial after his aunt was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. “We tried to help her find a trial, but even with support from my cancer researcher mother, we couldn’t find one in time,” he says. “Then while I was working in the healthcare patient advocacy space, I really spent time talking to patients, providers, and policymakers and realized that the problem was much larger and a symptom of broken system that places the burden on patients and families. The idea was for this tool to help people navigate that system and be empowered to take control over their own health.” 

The Making of a Startup 

Backed by the Kogod Veloric Center for Entrepreneurship, the FindMyClinicalTrial team hit the ground running. They attended major industry events like the Consumer Electronics Show and DC Startup Week, where they expanded their network and pitched their concept. They walked away with a partnership with the Mayo Clinic and funding through private investors.  

Their first product was a sleek, web-based platform that used AI and natural language tools to help users find trials that matched their condition, location, and preferences. Encouraged by early feedback, the team expanded to mobile, launching apps on both iOS and Android. They’ve continued to refine the experience—adding accessibility features, patient engagement tools, and more ways to save, share, and track personalized results. 

Today, users can explore simplified trial summaries, chat with an AI assistant, and stay updated on new opportunities—all designed to make a complex process feel a little easier. 

They have also implemented a “trial partner portal” for research sites. It allows clinical trial research sites and centers to promote studies and connect directly with potential participants—with the goal of streamlining recruitment. 

“From the beginning, we worked closely as a team, meeting regularly to refine and improve the concept with input from different perspectives and skill sets,” says Emma Briggs. “Our shared mission was to create a patient-centered solution using technology that could make a real difference.” 

Expanded Reach, Greater Impact 

With strong early momentum, FMCT is focused on improving its platform and expanding its reach and impact—bringing the platform to more patients and building partnerships with hospitals, MyChart, and other health tools. Ultimately, the team wants FMCT to become the go-to hub for clinical trial discovery, a portal that makes participation easier, more inclusive, and more accessible.  

“Listening to and understanding feedback from patients, research sites, advisors, and investors has allowed us to build a platform that connects patients with clinical trials in the most streamlined, user-friendly way possible,” says Satzinger, now Senior Vice President of Technological Development. 

Briggs, the startup’s Director of Strategic Communications, agrees: “Being part of the FindMyClinicalTrial team has been so rewarding. Getting to have such a hands-on understanding of all aspects of the company—and seeing it grow from an idea into something valuable—has been extremely fulfilling.”
