The Investigative Reporting Workshop, based at the School of Communication at American University, was founded in 2008.   IRW is an editorially independent, nonprofit newsroom. Staff and freelancers investigate stories, and editors also pair graduate and undergraduate students with professional reporters and editors to produce stories.  Wesley Lowery is the current executive editor and a professor in the School of Communication.
