Once you have vacated your space, check yourself out by:

  1. Logging on to the AU Housing Portal
  2. Click ‘Self Check Out’ at the top of the page.
  3. Select your spring booking and follow instructions on the Portal.

Items rented from vendors (fridges, microwaves, etc.) should be clean and left in your room for AU staff to pick up.

Room and board will be prorated. Students who vacate campus will not be charged for the portion of term they don’t live in the residence halls (or use meals plans.)

Students do not need to apply for refunds. You can expect to receive a prorated credit on you student account and will be issued a refund as appropriate. Here’s how it will work:

  • If your banking information is on file, Student Accounts will automatically produce an ACH refund to your account. If no banking information is on file, then a refund check will be mailed to the mailing address on file.
  • Do you receive Financial Aid? In that case, please be assured that the Office of Financial Aid will review the case, to ensure the student’s financial aid package is not over-awarded (which would have negative financial implications for the student) before a refund can be issued.

Housing and Dining Services will begin to review for housing/meal plan credits after March 23.

If you have questions, please contact AU Central, AUCentral@american.edu.

Yes, they can! If you can't return before March 23, you can fill out a form to allow a designated third party to remove your belongings.

Complete our Proxy Move Out Form to request that someone else be provided access to remove your belongings. Please note that only the student (not a parent) can fill out the Proxy Move Out Form, and your roommate must agree. (The form automatically notifies them and they will provide an affirmative sign-off. This additional sign-off is not required if the other roommate/s have already checked out.)

We understand how hard this unexpected Move-Out is on students who were away from campus when it was announced. We hope this helps.
