Paperwork: Bills, EagleBucks & More
With offices working remotely, here's how to connect and access services in a virtual environment.
AU Central: One-Stop Student Services Center
AU Central, as always, is the hub for key services - including Student Accounts (bills, refunds, tax information and more), the Registrar (registration, transcripts, forms, catalogs), and Veterans Educational Benefits.
Staff are cross-trained in all those areas. Though working remotely, they are available from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on weekdays (except on Wednesdays, when hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
Reach AU Central staff:
- by live chat, at help.american.edu
- by phone, 202 885-8000
- by email, at AUCentral@american.edu
- to schedule a Zoom appointment, email AUCentral@american.edu.
Emails are responded to within 24 hours.
EagleBucks – including GrubHub nationwide
AU students anywhere can get a year of free delivery (Grubhub Plus subscription service) if you use EagleBucks to order delivery. Download the Grubhub app and follow steps in Settings > Payment > Add New Payment.
In Settings, the steps are easy:
- Add American University
- Select your affiliation (Class of ’24, Class of ’23, etc.)
- Add campus card (which will route to the secure university site for authentication)
- Verify OneCard addition under Payment
Faculty, staff, alumni and families can also receive these benefits if they have an EagleBucks account.
COVID emergency relief funding: To assist students impacted by COVID-19, the US Congress allocated funding under the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). At AU, over $3 million has been allocated to assist students through this fund. Around 6300 AU students met the minimum federally established eligibility criteria as of June 30. For more information, including eligibility criteria and the application form, please see AU's HEERF site.
AU requires all full-time students, all students who live in AU housing (when applicable), and all international students with F-1 and J-1 visas to carry comprehensive personal health insurance.
Students in these categories are automatically enrolled in AU-sponsored health insurance, provided by CareFirst. The annual premium is assessed to your student account. If you have questions about your health insurance benefits and are already enrolled in the plan, contact CareFirst at 1-844-898-3332.
To waive this insurance, you must file a waiver request by September 18. To be approved for a waiver, students must demonstrate that you are covered by another insurance plan that provides comprehensive coverage in Washington DC or where you are physically located for the academic year.
OneCard AU ID
If you need a new AU ID card, the OneCard office will be open by appointment only for in-person service on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30 am – 3 pm.
Registrar – Registration, Transcripts, Enrollment Verification
The Office of the Registrar is part of AU Central and operating virtually. Its webpages are the places to find information on registration, transcripts, class schedules, and more. It also provides many important forms, including internship registration, personal data change, independent study, request for temporary leave and more.
To register for classes or add/drop, work with your advisor. The Registrar’s page can provide you with key background information in one online location needed to navigate this process effectively – including dates, the waitlist process, refunds and more.
