  3. Upload 3 Supplemental Items:
    1. Approval by Partner University
      Your home university must be a Washington Semester partner.
      Email us at washsem@american.edu to find out your university partners with us.
    2. Official Transcript
      Have your home university email your official transcript to ogisdocuments@american.edu
    3. Proof of English Fluency
      Minimum scores for admission:
      • Duolingo English Test (DET) 120 (110 on subscores)
      • Internet Based TOEFL 85 (Minimum of 20 on Speaking & Listening)
      • IELTS 6.5 (Minimum of 6 on subsections)
      • Pearson Test of English (PTE) 60
      • Cambridge Assessment English 176 (Minimum of 169 on subscores)
      • Common European Framework (CEF) B-2 Level or Higher (from partner)
      • SAT1-Verbal: 530

How to Upload supplemental items:

  1. Login to your application account
  2. Click on your application
  3. Under the page header, click the grayed-out link that says:
    "Supplemental Items & Documents"

What if you don't meet the minimum English fluency requirements?
You have the option to enroll in the English Training Language Academy (ELTA) for one semester prior to joining WSP.

Upon successful completion of ELTA, you will progress to the Washington Semester Program. 

To qualify for ELTA, your minimum scores must be: 

  • Internet Based TOEFL: 75
  • IELTS: 6.0
  • PTE: 50

What kind of visa will you apply for?
J-1 Visa

Once you've been admitted to the Washington Semester Program, we will ask you to provide the following documents:

  • Form: Certification of Finances for International Students (CFIS)
  • Notarized Bank Letter
  • Copy of your passport

Summer Program

Our summer program is not open to students from non-U.S. universities!

If you're an international student attending a university in the U.S. you can participate in the summer. Please follow domestic applicant instructions for summer.
