Our industry-experienced community of scholars will prepare students with an in-depth understanding of global migration dynamics, impacts, policies, and interventions that can be applied to careers across the policy and advocacy sectors. The curriculum for this program aims to establish a foundational understanding of global migration today, its causes and effects, and the greater international context of the field. The Global Migration certificate program will empower aspiring international professionals with the skills they need to navigate complex and relevant issues affecting refugees and migrants worldwide.
This graduate program requires 12 credits, with 3 credits from foundational courses, 6 credits from electives, and 3 credits to fulfill a competence application course. The competence application generally involves a capstone project focused on issues related to humanitarianism within the context of global migration.
Foundational courses cover topics central to global migration, with focused study on globalization, human relations, and migration policy. Our curricular approach integrates scholarly, ethical, and policy debates as it relates to global migration. American University's commitment to dynamic research further enhances the depth of understanding a student can gain from studying as a part of this community. The Global Migration certificate program prepares aspiring international professionals with the skills and solutions they need to navigate real-world issues.
Students in the Global Migration certificate program learn from a multidisciplinary faculty with backgrounds as policymakers, practitioners, and researchers. As a certificate program through SIS jointly supported by the Department of Peace, Human Rights & Cultural Relations and the Department of Environment, Development & Health, the global migration program broadly features experts in policy, international affairs, peacebuilding and diplomacy, as well as transnational studies, human rights, and international development specialists.

This certificate program is designed to be completed at no extra time or cost investment for existing MA students. Tuition is assessed on a per-credit basis. Other student fees are required.
