Eagle Family Webinars, New Student and Family Programs

Whether your Eagle is new to AU or is approaching graduation, we are here for you! The Eagle Family Webinar Series seeks to expose Eagle families to AU staff and resources to help families best support their students and facilitate ways for families and supporters to work well in partnership with AU.

Sending your child to college involves a lot of transition for the students AND for the parents and families that support them! In this session, Dr. Bridget Trogden (AU’s Dean of Undergraduate Education and Academic Student Services) is drawing on what we know about new students and her twenty years of experience as a professor to bring you valuable information about helping your student start and stay strong academically in the first year at AU. We will cover key vocabulary for you to know, highlight supports available for your student’s development as a learner, and discuss strategies and first semester milestones.

We invite you to join President Jon Alger for a listening session with AU parents and families. Throughout the semester, President Alger is engaging in an active listening tour to learn more about the AU community by asking questions and soliciting feedback as he develops his vision for the university’s future. This is your opportunity to share your thoughts about what makes AU special and unique, and how we can build a stronger, better AU.

This session will cover the many ways students can get engaged and involved on campus, and the offices that support them in exploring interests and creating opportunities to make the most of campus life at AU! For AU’s social fraternities and sororities, spring recruitment is only weeks away. Whether your student is just curious about the new member process or they're already a proud member of the community, we're pretty sure that you've got some questions. 

This session is scheduled in advance of the spring recruitment season for our three councils. Staff will explain the fraternity and sorority community, what they do, how they recruit, and how we all work to foster connection and student thriving through the Fraternity and Sorority Life experience.  

In advance of this session, you may find it helpful to review the range of resources available through the Fraternity and Sorority Life website.  

*Students must have earned a minimum of 12 credit hours at AU, post high school graduation or be a transfer student with 12 credit hours from an accredited college or university to participate in recruitment activities in spring semester.

AU offers a comprehensive array of resources, programs, and services to assist students and graduates with their career progression. In this session you will meet staff from our three career offices who will discuss resources for students, opportunities for student/alumni engagement with employers, and how families can best support their students. Included will be an update on current trends in hiring and in-demand skills and competencies. Join us to learn more!

Studying abroad can be a transformative experience on so many levels. Between picking the “right” program and thriving in a new culture, it seems like there are countless decisions to make.  In this session, the AU Abroad team shares how you can help your student choose a program, finance their studies, and access health and student services while overseas. There have been significant changes to the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). In this session, we will walk through the key elements of the FAFSA with AU's own Shirleyne McDonald, Director of Financial Aid. This session will focus on need-based (not merit-based) aid and is best suited for parents/sponsors of undergraduate students. Before participating in this session, you may find it helpful to visit the Financial Office's website.

Is your student hoping to move off campus? This can be an exciting step towards adulthood, but it also comes with new responsibilities for students and lots of big questions for families. How will your student manage roommate issues or landlord/tenant issues? How does AU address off-campus student conduct?

Join us as we explore: 

  • various resources offered by the Housing and Residence Life team to help students to find available housing and potential roommates, 
  • how the Dean of Students office works with students to be good neighbors and to navigate neighborhood concerns, and 
  • practical tips for supporting your Eagle's transition to living off campus.
