11 Kogod School of Business
Kogod is the oldest accredited business school in DC.
AU has had a business program since 1919, when the university was still a graduate-only institution. It was not until 1955 that the business program became its own school. In 1979, it was named for real estate developer and philanthropist Robert Kogod, Kogod/BS ’62, and his wife, Arlene.
Kogod moved to its current location in 1999. Before that, the space was home to the John Sherman Myers Law Building, which opened in 1964 to house Washington College of Law. It was also the site of the New Lecture Hall, which opened in 1968.
WCL boasts its own unique heritage. Incorporated in 1898, it was the first law school founded by women: Ellen Spencer Mussey and Emma Gillett. Suffragist Alice Paul, author of the Equal Rights Amendment, was among WCL’s first graduates (she earned three degrees from AU). The school merged with AU in 1949 and moved to Tenley Campus in 2016.
