All medical records are treated as confidential information under applicable federal and state laws as well as university policies. Students 18 years of age and older need to complete a release of medical records form in order to let SHC staff speak with parents and/or guardians about their medical treatment at the SHC.
All students enrolled in credit bearing, degree seeking courses at American University, regardless of the type of insurance they carry, are eligible for care in the Student Health Center. Students who have recently graduated or have not registered for the current semester, cannot be seen at the Student Health Center.
The Student Health Center's fee schedule is designed to keep your costs as low as possible. You pay a visit fee each time you access care, and there are charges for on-site medical tests and ancillary services. SHC does not bill insurances, however if you are seeking reimbursement for services rendered at the health center, you may request a receipt at check-out or print a receipt from the student health portal, see instructions below.
In order to provide students with the best care available, the Student Health Center charges low-cost visit fees rather than making students work with complex insurance rules, elaborate co-payments, or insurance deductibles. If you would like your provider to perform rapid, in-house testing (for example 15 minute strep, mono, flu or HIV tests), there may be some additional fees associated with those tests. While we try to keep these fees as low as possible for students, the medical testing supplies can be expensive and the fees help to cover these costs.
The Student Health Center utilizes an outside laboratory LabCorp. LabCorp will bill your insurance company and send you a bill for any charges that are not covered by your insurance company. If LabCorp is not your insurance company preferred laboratory, the Student Health Center can provide you with written orders to take to an in-network Laboratory.
The Student Health Center accepts cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Eaglebucks as forms of payment for the visit fees. If you have any questions regarding the costs of tests or medications you may be given, please talk to your medical provider during your visit. Receipt for services - you may print a receipt through the student health portal after each visit, click under "Appt. Scheduling", "view appointments.", then go to the tab "Previous Appointments", you will see a Receipt column to print your visit receipt.
