SOC & CMSI Present SOC PDA: He Said What?! with Kurt Braddock

Politicians and media figures are supposed to be responsible caretakers of democracy. But what happens when trusted public figures "joke" about using violence against political opponents? In this talk, Professor Kurt Braddock will show how violent subtext and "jokes" are no laughing matter, and can lead to actual violence against American citizens.

The Center for Media & Social Impact (CMSI) Presents SOC PDA (Professors Doing Awesome): Communication professors are doing amazing things all over the world, making an impact through their books, research, films, photo exhibits, journalism, media festivals, and so much more. Who are they and how do they do what they do? A groundbreaking look at the history of transgender representation in TV and film, by an of-the-moment and in-demand culture reporter, Tre'vell Anderson. WE SEE EACH OTHER is a personal history of trans visibility since the beginning of moving images. A literary reckoning, it unearths a transcestry that’s long existed in plain sight and in the shadows of history’s annals, and further contextualizes our present moment of increased representation. As a Latino scholar teaching and researching in the U.S./Mexico borderlands, Dr. Soto-Vásquez brings a special perspective to the process of "Migrant World Making." His talk will also touch on issues of migrant meaning-making on Instagram, contemporary political debate about immigration and the border, and recent illustrations of "Migrant World Making" in action.
