Stephanie Staley
Chairman, Sherburne, NY Town Planning Board
What was the most valuable thing you learned from WeLead?
We Lead taught me the power of the press. By using press releases strategically, we’ve strengthened the impact and visibility of our community work. The better people understand what we’re building, the more support and alignment we’re able to generate.
What was your favorite part of the program?
Working collaboratively with my cohort to practice campaign fundraising.
What advice would you give to the current WeLead class?
In order to lead others well, you have to develop the ability to lead yourself. WeLead helped me become more intentional about navigating interpersonal dynamics and listening for what people need beneath the surface of disagreement. In high-conflict environments, I’ve found that strong leadership is about creating enough trust and clarity for people to work toward a shared goal. That combination of steadiness, empathy, and accountability has become central to how I lead.
How did you secure your current position, and did it include any WeLead networking or alumnae?
I was appointed by my community to lead our 10-year comprehensive planning process, a role that has given me the opportunity to bring together residents, officials, and other stakeholders around long-term priorities for our community. WeLead played an important role in preparing me for that work. The program opened up a network of women leading the way for me to learn from, and strengthened my ability to communicate with confidence. I can navigate challenging political environments, make systems operational, and use my voice thoughtfully. Those skills have stayed with me as I’ve taken on increasingly complex leadership responsibilities.
Any other thoughts on your WeLead experience?
I would 100% recommend this program to other emerging leaders!
