Shared Momentum: Eagles Meeting the Moment Student Affairs Action Plan

Meet Our Moment, American University’s five-year strategic plan (2026–2030), is a commitment to preparing students for career and personal success while strengthening the institution’s impact on the world. In alignment with this vision, the Division of Student Affairs has developed a five-year strategic action plan to define its contribution to Meet Our Moment. Titled Shared Momentum: Eagles Meeting the Moment, the Division’s strategic action plan is grounded in the core values that shape our work and our aspiration to be a national model for programs, services, and partnerships.

Headshot of Dayne Hutchinson"Meet Our Moment gives us a clear vision for where American University is headed. Shared Momentum defines how Student Affairs will help bring that vision to life, translating Readiness, Community, and Curiosity into meaningful experiences that help students build relationships, develop skills, discover their purpose, and prepare for what comes next."

Student Belonging

We commit to Student Belonging and fostering a community that values inclusive excellence, and accessibility for all students. We strive to create an environment where diverse perspectives are valued, voices are heard, and all individuals have the opportunity to thrive. We commit to developing and supporting student-led programming and organizations that foster community for students across identities and interests.

Student-Centered

We are committed to a student-centered approach that prioritizes growth, advocacy, and development for students. Through mentorship, recognition, and skill-building opportunities, we empower individuals to enhance their knowledge and create positive social change. Our decisions, policies, and governance are guided by our dedication to students’ education and development.

Holistic Well-Being

We commit to prioritizing students’ holistic wellbeing. Every student deserves to be healthy, both physically, spiritually, and emotionally to thrive academically and socially. We will provide services and structures that support students in these domains to aid in their retention and their successful completion of their academic careers at American University.

Active, Engaged, Global, and Civic-Minded Community

We commit to fostering an active, engaged, and civic minded student community in service of education, growth, accountability, and understanding of the world we live in and the communities we aspire to create.

Resource Development

We commit to resource development and the alignment of human, physical, and fiscal resources to deliver the highest quality programs and services to the AU Community.

Staff Engagement and Professional Development

We are committed to staff engagement in ongoing professional development and continued education around topics and issues most salient to student needs and the emerging and ever-changing landscape of higher education. We recognize that if we want students to do well and thrive, our staff must be equipped with the resources and expertise to support them.

Action Plan Strategic Vision for Student Affairs

The plan centers a student-focused approach that integrates curricular and co-curricular experiences, guided by five foundational priorities: Purpose, Thriving, Leadership, Belonging, and Integrity. Shared Momentum is aligned with the University’s three strategic pillars, Readiness, Community, and Curiosity- and outlines how Student Affairs will translate these priorities into action through coordinated goals and initiatives. Together, these efforts are designed to help students turn potential into achievement while advancing the broader mission of American University.
