Being a first-generation college student at American University is about more than a label—it’s about identity, experience, and the many ways students navigate higher education while shaping their own path forward.
Through the Center for Student Belonging, students are supported in understanding every part of that experience and in building the tools to thrive academically, personally, and professionally. You belong here—and CSB is here to walk with you as you do.

Signature First-Gen Programming at AU
CSB brings the first-gen experience to life through intentional programming that builds community, celebrates achievement, and fosters belonging, including:
-
First-Generation Dinners with the Provost – opportunities for dialogue, connection, and shared experience with institutional leadership
-
First Gen Poolza – a campus-wide celebration recognizing National First-Gen Day in November
-
Tri-Alpha Inductions (Fall & Spring) – honoring first-generation academic excellence and achievement through national first-gen honor society recognition
-
And additional programs and initiatives that build community, visibility, and pride among first-generation students
Each of these experiences is designed to affirm identity, strengthen belonging, and highlight the academic excellence of first-generation students.

What does “first-gen” mean at AU?
At AU, you are considered a first-generation college student if your parent(s) or guardian(s) have not completed a four-year college degree. This definition helps the university better understand and support the full range of student experiences.
Tri Alpha
Tri-Alpha, also known as Alpha Alpha Alpha, is a national honor society for first-generation students. Learn more about AU's Tri-Alpha chapter Eta Sigma.
First Forward
Because of our commitment to first-gen students, AU was designated as a First Forward Institution by the Center for First-generation Student Success.
