Title IX at AU An Overview of AU's New Policy & Processes

On May 6, 2020, the US Department of Education released their new guidance and regulations pertaining to Title IX on college campuses. American University quickly formed a Title IX Working Group to figure out how to best implement the new regulations by the given deadline of August 14, while still keeping students at the forefront of our policies. This webinar will provide an overview of the new Office of Equity and Title IX, what changes have been made to our processes and policies, what things will remain the same, and what services are available to students throughout the process.

Resources for Off-Campus Renters
Wednesday, August 5, 2020 This webinar will be presented to assist AU students and families in understanding their rights, responsibilities, and options related to off-campus leases. This webinar will focus primarily on leases for properties in the District of Columbia, but lease holders in Virginia and Maryland are welcome. The webinar will feature staff from AU’s Office of Campus Life and Office of General Counsel and a staff member from the D.C. Office of the Tenant Advocate. This webinar is not intended to provide legal advice. In preparation for the webinar, attendees are encouraged to review the information listed on the Off-Campus Housing webpage.

A Conversation with Professor Angela Davis: Policing the Black Man

Angela J. Davis, professor of law at AU's Washington College of Law, is an expert in criminal law and procedure with a specific focus on prosecutorial power and racism in the criminal justice system. Davis previously served as director of the DC Public Defender Service, where she began as a staff attorney representing indigent juveniles and adults. She also served as executive director of the National Rainbow Coalition and is a former law clerk of the Honorable Theodore R. Newman, the former Chief Judge of the DC Court of Appeals. Davis is the author of Arbitrary Justice: The Power of the American Prosecutor (Oxford University Press 2007). She is also the editor of Policing the Black Man: Arrest, Prosecution and Imprisonment (Penguin Random House, forthcoming 2017), co-editor of Criminal Law (Sage Publications 2015, with Professor Katheryn Russell-Brown), Trial Stories (Foundation Press 2007, with Professor Michael E. Tigar) and the 7th edition of Basic Criminal Procedure (Thomson West, forthcoming 2017, with Professors Stephen Saltzburg and Daniel Capra).
New Title IX Regulations: Bringing the AU Community Together to Discuss and Share

The Department of Education released new regulations related to Title IX last week, requiring that all universities implement these requirements by August 14, 2020. This panel will discuss the initial review of the guidelines and respond to student questions. The panel will share information on the university’s commitment to a robust program of prevention, education, and adjudication of cases, and will offer thoughts on how AU will engage meeting the required regulations while maintaining a commitment to community safety and support.
