Respiratory Protection Program

American University maintains a Respiratory Protection Program for employees who are required to wear a respirator as part of their job duties. The program comprises annual training, medical evaluation, and annual fit testing. If you have any concerns about respiratory hazards in your workplace, please contact EH&S.

Voluntary Use

If an employee chooses to use a respirator (including N95 masks) on a voluntary basis (i.e., the respirator is not required by the employer), the employee must be provided with the information contained in Appendix D of the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard. Please note that in some cases, a respirator has the potential to make breathing more difficult for the wearer. If you have a chronic respiratory, cardiac, or other medical condition, please consult with your physician before choosing to wear a respirator.
